This is very interesting to me as a descendant of New Netherland. The biggest reason why Carolus Rex lost the Battle of Poltava was because one of his favorite generals, General Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt, would merge his army corps with Carolus Rex's army corps during the campaign against Poltava. But Lewenhaupt lost thousands of his soldiers during the march due to resistance from the Russians and several disastrous decisions. Once in Poltava, Lewenhaupt and Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld began to argue about how the armies should be formed. Karl XII appointed Rehnskiöld as the commander of the battle because the king himself was unfit for battle due to his gunshot wound. Lewenhaupt became enraged when he was not appointed commander and on several occasions during the battle he did not do as he had been ordered by Rehnskiöld. After the Battle of Poltava, the king was mad at Lewenhaupt and would never forgive him.
